SpecVetteTM Cuvettes

SpecVettes are UV-transparent, short pathlength, disposable cuvettes especially designed for use with the HR4000 and HR2000+ High-resolution Spectrometers. Economical and disposable, SpecVettes eliminate cross-contamination and reduce analyte consumption.

SpecVettes are available in pathlengths of 250, 500, and 1000 microns and only require a few microliters of sample solution, eliminating the many challenges associated with measuring highly concentrated samples using traditional, short-path cuvettes. A special universal adapter makes SpecVettes useable with our CUV-ALL-UV cuvette holder. Other features include UV transparency to 220 nm, and an easy-to-fill pipette tip port, and optional valves and electrodes.

About SpecVettes

The design of the SpecVettes simplifies the measurement of UV-absorbing compounds such as tannins and phenols, which normally require dilution to use a standard 1 cm pathlength cuvette. SpecVettes are flat, rectangular cells with a simple inlet port that allows a 20-200 µL pipetter to fill the sample window either by dispensing or allowing the sample to be drawn into the sample chamber by capillary action. The SpecVette then slides into a 1 cm by 1 cm sample holder such as the CUV-ALL-UV. Each SpecVette contains two sample windows, making to possible to have a match sample and a blank on a single device.

SpecVettes are sold in packs of 25, with or without the universal adapter. Two-piece sample packs are also available.

SpecVettes are a product of ALine, Inc., which specializes in small-volume disposables for lab analysis.

Universal Adapter

A universal adapter is available to allow SpecVettes to be used with any spectrometer with a z-height of 12 to 20 mm. SpecVettes are compatible with the Ocean Optics HR4000 and HR2000+ Spectrometers when used with the universal adapter in the CUV-ALL-UV cuvette holder.

Benefits

  • Easy to use, no risk of breakage

  • Fast throughput, does not require washing/cleaning between samples

  • High accuracy and reliability

  • Cost-effective and disposable

  • Customizable to meet specific requirements

  • Flat form factor makes viewing by microscope possible for transmission

  • Capillary fill eliminates trapped air bubbles

Measurement Data

The following graphs show that SpecVettes and the adapter can be used with an Ocean Optics spectrometer (in this case, an HR4000) for precise determination of strong UV-absorbing components in samples such as red wine. A DH-2000-BAL light source was also used, along with the SpecVettes (500 µm pathlength) and the universal adapter.

In Figure 2, 10 different cuvettes with the same wine sample were compared against a single water blank. In Figure 3, a series of 10 repeat measurements were taken with the same wine sample using the same water blank.
